About this deal

My kids and I discovered a stream filled with salmon. I knew it was the perfect chance to try out the TG-6 underwater. Overall, it's a good lens, and certainly the best you'll find among other waterproof models with zoom capability. Less expensive cameras aren't as good in dim conditions—their lenses don't capture as much light. Optimized for underwater photography that uses natural light. (e.g. in swimming pools or shallow waters)

The camera is up and running from cold in a couple of seconds, and finds focus with a half-press of the shutter-release button in the blink of an eye – as with most compact cameras nowadays. Here’s the field of view with the TOUGH TG-6 at its maximum 25mm equivalent wide angle setting. It’s wider than the Fujifilm Finepix XP140’s 28-140mm f3.9-4.9 lens and a whole lot brighter too. The same goes for the Nikon COOLPIX W150 which is equivalent to 30-90mm on a 35mm camera. For me, it’s a great secondary camera to take places where I just don’t want to risk my Sony a7 III. I need to spend some more time learning it’s deeper functions, but that’s ok too. New to the Tough TG-6 are a slew of high-speed recording modes for video. In addition to being able to shoot 4K video at 30fps, it can also record 1080p up to 120fps, 720p at 240fps and 360p at 480fps. The wide-angle 25mm-equivalent view the TG-6 provides inevitably delivers a slight fisheye effect when shooting close up at this widest setting, while we found that in particularly bright and sunny conditions images are close to overexposure, with a loss of highlight detail. You’ll have to get used to keeping your ISO at 1600 or lower (you’ll need a steady hand for the slow shutter speed that results). Although unchanged from the earlier TG-5, the new model’s macro shooting features remain in a class of their own. The TG-6 can close focus to 1cm, allowing you to get close in to small creatures on land and in the water. What really makes it special, though, is the microscope mode, which essentially allows you to use the full extent of the zoom whilst maintaining the same 1cm close focus distance. What’s new is that you can now use microscope mode underwater. Normally, you need a dedicated macro lens if you want to take close-up, macro, or microscopic photos. That means a financial investment and another lens in your bag. But the TG-6 has this capability built-in. The close-up function is worth the cost of the camera. Get in, the water’s nice!

Ease of use –Embracing the point-and-shoot ethos, this camera makes unthinkable shots a reality. If you’re a veteran photographer looking for a holiday camera, you’ll instantly know your way around. If you’re completely new, however, menus and prompts will nudge you in the right direction for the perfect shot. If you want a slow shutter speed to capture motion blur then you need to understand how to force the camera to produce a slow shutter speed. But when I leave my cameras lying around, my wife doesn’t like the clutter (even though she loves the photos that result from the clutter). Even in underwater snapshot mode you can get fairly close to small sea creatures. The white balance is automatically set to shallow depth and, as you can see it does an excellent job of reproducing the warmer colours in this anemone’s tentacles. For getting in any closer than this you’re better off using the underwater macro or microscope mode.At first, I thought it was a problem that there was no shutter speed mode on the TG-6. But then I realized that it wasn’t really necessary. You just have to know how to work around it.

The waiting time, number of shots and focus steps can be set after selecting in the sub mode. In (Shooting menu 2), select Focus BKT. The battery is rated for 340 shots by CIPA standards, but I found that you'll get a bit less than that in practice if you utilize the GPS and Wi-Fi features. Thankfully, you can recharge via USB, so it's easy enough to top off while on the go—assuming you don't mind carrying a power bank in addition to a point-and-shoot.Of course it’s possible to manually dial down exposure or adjust the ISO setting if you realize this at the time of shooting, although bright conditions also affect the visibility of the LCD screen, which doesn't help matters. The number of shots and the length of time the camera waits before shooting starts can be selected.

So the Olympus Tough TG-6 is weak under extreme lighting conditions, but so are many other cameras. For many of us, high ISO with low noise is the last frontier on the technological side of photography. I see this is as a bad thing. It's easy enough to go into your iPhone notifications and turn them off—and I recommend you do so if buy a TG-6. But it shouldn't be an issue in the first place—Olympus should know better than to turn a utility app into an advertising platform. Speed and Autofocus You can change the magnification level to 1x, 2x or 4x by pressing the arrow pad Right button. Up to 44.4x (35 mm equivalent: 28x) is possible when using the zoom simultaneously. Simplicity –In an age where we’re constantly demanding more from our tech, the TG-6 revels in its set-and-forget mentality. The options are there if you need them, but you can easily get away with choosing a single mode and snapping until your heart’s content. When the mode dial is already set to (Microscope mode), press the arrow pad Left button to select other sub modes. To remove the lens ring, rotate the lens ring in the remove direction (to the left) while pressing down the remove button ( ). The waterproofing seals worked without a hitch and there was never a moment where the camera itself seemed at risk of leaking. There’s a lot of competition in the tough camera market right now – it remains one of the only compact areas that hasn’t yet been decimated by the unstoppable march of the smartphone. Olympus has revamped the underwater shooting capabilities of the TG-6 with three new underwater white balance modes designed for shooting in shallow, mid range and deep water. You can select these in ‘normal’ shooting modes like program auto and Aperture priority, but they’re also coupled with the five underwater shooting modes, so for example when you select underwater snapshot, the underwater shallow white balance preset is automatically selected (though it can be overridden).
