It has received critical acclaim for the quality of its prose, its forest setting, and its exploration of philosophical, spiritual and psychological themes. The ground rose slightly and the tangled undergrowth was broken by weathered, lichen-covered stubs of grey limestone.The story is also considered an "inward spiral" in which the protagonists undergo cruel and devastating metamorphoses in a difficult setting.

I was hoping for another all-time favorite, to join books like Oryx and Crake or The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Mythago Wood is epic on the human scale, the individual lives of his protagonists caught up in the great web of story that connects each one of us to the other and to the past.

The destruction of the Huxley family has been caused by the creation, out of father Huxley's mind, of Guiwenneth, the mythago of an idealized red-haired Celtic warrior princess who occasionally comes out of the woods. For a few years in the early 90’s I was given masks wherever I went (there are ten masks in the novel, all of them ‘gateways’ into different unknown regions of the past). As I get more experienced in fantasy genre I rarely have "Well this is unlike anything I have read before" moments. I loved the concept behind Mythago Wood, an immense wood that can create creatures of myth and legend from the mind’s of humans. The special 30th Anniversary edition of Mythago Wood was published as part of the Gollancz Fantasy Masterworks series in 2014, featuring an introduction by Neil Gaiman which you can read here.

So, for example, if you strolled through Mythago Wood (if you could get in) you might encounter Robin Hood, King Arthur, Talos, Freya, or perhaps some more generic version of a popular legendary ideal. His interest in Celtic and Nordic mythology was a consistent theme throughout his fantasy and is most prominently reflected in the acclaimed Merlin Codex trilogy, consisting of Celtika , The Iron Grail and The Broken Kings , published between 2001 and 2007.It demands your attention, stretches your imagination, and leaves you wanting…I loved this book and have no doubt that so too would you! The story itself is super interesting and dark although I do think S and H friendship was significantly underdeveloped.
