About this deal

Seamus Heaney’s deeply felt interpretation, widely acknowledged as the greatest Beowulf translation of modern times, is presented in parallel with the Old English verse in this fabulous Folio edition. There are good moments too, of course, with some excellent descriptions of the workings of artillery and the process of an escalade in a siege, especially when Sharpe is on the ladder. And only Sharpe - with just his cunning, his courage and a small band of rogues to rely on - stands in their way.

Featuring a fascinating introduction by Val McDermid and new illustrations by Juan Esteban Rodríguez, each copy has been signed by both the introducer and the illustrator. The protagonist is an archer who participates in the Battle of Agincourt, another devastating defeat suffered by the French in the Hundred Years War. A little by the numbers in some places and the main antagonist was a little mid but the action is as high octane as ever and I really enjoyed the climax . I love it hen history is brought to life through fiction and Bernard Cornwall has done a superb job of this in Sharpes Command. He's also got a different spelling here, where he used to be "Garrard", he's now "Gerrard", which initially led me to believe he was a different person, but no.Richard Sharpe, the most brilliant – but the most wayward – soldier in the British army, finds himself faced with an impossible task. The ending was terribly predictable and I could not wait to finish it and get onto something more authentic. Poor old Richard Sharpe gets to fight in what seems to be every action in the Peninsular War and into France (and there are the pre-sequel and post-sequel books too). Douglas Smith was born in New York City and attended the Rhode Island School of Design, earning his BFA in Illustration in 1974, having also studied sculpture, painting and printmaking. A good rollicking read as usual about a campaign I’d long wanted to see, with Sharpe in the thick of the action alongside (Daddy) Hill.

He then joined BBC's Nationwide and was promoted to become head of current affairs at BBC Northern Ireland. The groundbreaking debut novel of Hugo Award-winning author Becky Chambers, one of the most imaginative voices in contemporary science fiction, is a truly galactic limited edition.Don't get me wrong, this is as enjoyable as any other book by Cornwell, but you have to wonder why we're going back into earlier times. Cornwell wanted to start the series with the Siege of Badajoz but decided instead to start with a couple of "warm-up" novels. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Bernard, if you’re going to keep writing Sharpe, please do him justice, this was just Sharpe by numbers.

I understand if Bernard Cornwell had forgotten certain things about the series because it has been a long time since he’s written a Sharpe book, but there were big inconsistency and editing issues throughout this. If the French are stopped from crossing the bridge, the British would be able to destroy the Fort they intend to. And the impossible is exactly what the formidable Major Sharpe is asked to do when he's dispatched on an undercover mission behind enemy lines, deep in the Spanish countryside.Cornwell was sent away to Monkton Combe School, attended the University of London, and after graduating, worked as a teacher. It's clear to me that either Cornwell or his publisher no longer really care about Sharpe, because neither appear to have a continuity checker.
